FARGO - Police say a man was shot in the leg in a robbery outside a south Fargo convenience store this afternoon.

Fargo police Sgt. Chris Helmick said the gunshot victim, who police have not identified, was in the parking lot behind the Loaf 'N Jug convenience store at 1833 S. University Drive when he was approached by two black males

asking to bum a cigarette about 4:30 p.m.

The shooting victim told police one of the men shot him in the leg with a small caliber pistol and then took his wallet and cellphone, Helmick said.

The wound isn't expected to be life-threatening. The victim was taken to Essentia Health.

Police took an initial report not yet confirmed that the suspects left in a blue Chevy Tahoe, Helmick said.

Authorities plan to release a more detailed description of the suspects later tonight, he said.

Helmick said the timing of the stickup was rare, happening at a point in the day when traffic is heavier the area and many nearby employees of Essentia Health are getting off work.

The man called police at 4:57 p.m. from a trailer home in the 600 block of Countryside Trailer Court South, just east of 25th Street between Fifth and Seventh avenues south, Deputy Police Chief Pat Claus said.

He told police his friends had given him a ride to the trailer following the shooting, Claus said.
