FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota man is set to be sentenced for driving drunk and causing a crash that killed his brother.
Jamie Belgarde, of St. Michael, pleaded guilty in federal court with involuntary manslaughter. He faces a maximum penalty of eight years in prison.
Authorities say Belgarde was under the influence of alcohol and speeding last summer when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road and the vehicle crashed. Donald Belgarde Jr., a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Defense attorneys say Jamie Belgarde made a "terrible, tragic decision," but does not have a significant criminal history and has excelled at school and work. They're asking for a sentence of not more than 18 months.
Sentencing is scheduled Friday morning in Fargo.
