Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Roundabouts are gaining popularity on Minnesota roads, while helping to stop serious crashes.
State Transportation experts say the circular intersections prove safer, more environmentally sound and help the flow of traffic.
In fact national transportation statistics show they reduce fatalities by 90-percent.
Statewide, there are 115 roundabouts just one of those is located our region on Highway 75 and 60th Avenue, just south of Moorhead.
It was installed last year, after more than 40 some crashes in the past 20 years. Resulting in 6 fatalities.
Tom Swenson- MnDOT District 4 Traffic Engineer: "Your speeds are reduced because you're basically forced into a lower speed. If you do happen to run into another vehicle it's not a right angle crash, it's more of a merge fender bender type thing at slow speeds."
Two more roundabouts are scheduled to be built in our region - one on Highway 59 just south of Detroit Lakes and the other just off I-94 near Alexandria.
