Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- North Dakota's top two prosecutors say there's been an uptick in complaints about an international lottery scam.

They say "just hang up" if you get a call saying you have won money, but the prize can't be collected until you pay for insurance, taxes or other fees.

Scam artists convince people to buy pre-paid money cards, load the cards with money and call them with the code on the back.

The calls originate in Jamaica.

While these kind of scams have been around for years, in the last few weeks there have been hundreds of complaints called into the Attorney General's Consumer Protection office.

Wayne Stenehjem- ND Attorney General: "These are not credit cards, these are cash cards. Once you give the number on back of card, it is as good as having cash in hand and the money is gone."

Both U-S Attorney Tim Purdon and Stenehjem say they also received calls.
