(WDAY TV) -- An update to a story we brought to you back in 2011, when a local soldier was injured at war.

An explosion shattered both of Eric Mewes legs. But after multiple surgeries Mewes was able to walk again. Today, he was honored as the keynote speaker in Page, North Dakota.

That's where he explained his 18 month journey and how it's changed his outlook on life.

Mews says, "You don't want to honor these people one day. You want to do it all the time. There's no words to describe what a soldier, especially, ya know, the ones that give everything. There's no words for it."

Tonight at ten, reporter Andrea Hubbell talks with Mewes, who shares his full story and his journey to recovery.
