Invasive species won't stop a fishing tournament

Pelican Lakes (WDAY TV) -- It's the biggest threat to area lakes right now, invasive species, and soon could be threatening the events on the lakes.

Pelican Lakes (WDAY TV) -- It's the biggest threat to area lakes right now, invasive species, and soon could be threatening the events on the lakes.

FM Walleyes holds a huge fishing tournament every year at Pelican Lake,

but now that it's filled with invasive species -- it was considered to look elsewhere. In fact, a neighboring lake association board was rather upset about the tournament being held on infested waters.

The sandy shores along Big Cormorant Lake are just part of its beauty.

the other is what's not in the water, the lake remains invasive species free.

Bob Brunsvold: "I think that if you take your boat to a different lake and then come here you should wash it someplace."

Bob Brunsvold and other lake-home owners on Cormorant worry about the lake's future, just 10 minutes separate it from the infested Pelican Lake.

Just like its invasive species, Pelican Lakes reputation is spreading.

So much so, FM Walleyes tournament coordinator Barry Chouinard just about ended a 29 year tradition, dabbling with the idea to move the tournament.

Chouinard: "We decided we're going to try and run a very responsible tournament in light of the threat of invasive species."

In doing so the DNR has agreed to have a decontamination unit on site Wednesday through Sunday. Even that Chouinard agrees, isn't a fool proof plan because it's optional for anglers, no one can force them to use it.

And that's just another reason why is worried the infestation could spread.

Chouinard: "We should all be good citizens and do what they ask. If it truly is putting our fishing at risk the fisherman that come here from other towns or whatever it's going to affect them as well. So, we all have a responsibility to try and keep the lake clean."

Chouinard says prior to the start of the tournament all contestants will be reminded that Pelican Lake IS infested with Zebra Mussels and asked to use the decontamination unit.
