Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- North Dakota wildlife officials say winterkill isn't as bad as they originally thought. Despite the long, cold winter the Game and Fish department claim about 30 fishkills across the state. But reports are still streaming in.

Winterkill happens when heavy snowfall blocks sunlight from going into lakes. That limits oxygen available for fish.

Doug Leier- ND Game and Fish: "We have spots year in and year out where we're kind of teetering on the edge if we're going to lose fish or not. So, it's not a good thing but it is something that we're accustomed to dealing with in fish management in prairies of the upper rmid-west."

Game and Fish says all lakes affected by winterkill will be restocked.
