Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - As we speak, a lot of people are hitching up their boats and heading to Lake Country for Memorial Day weekend. But they could run into a few headaches along the way, from road construction projects.

As the evening wears on, a steady stream of traffic is moving through this MNDOT construction zone. The Eastbound lane of Highway 10 is closed, so drivers will want to be prepared for delays.

Memorial weekend is one of the busiest travel times of the year and the Detroit Lakes area swells with vacationers.

Dana Langworthy, Detroit Lakes: "Just gonna hang out on the beach in town with my friends."

Ron Shea, Mankato: "We try to come down every weekend. I didn't expect this traffic though. I am glad we are not going on highway 10."

Between Lake Park and Detroit Lakes, the highway is riddled with orange cones from a Minnesota Department of Transportation project.

Jesse Miller, MNDOT Engineer: "We were monitoring it last Friday, and it seemed to go OK, but being Memorial Day it will be busier."

They pulled workers from the roads a little early, anticipating heavy traffic.

Shea: "It's gonna get hectic. It's gonna get hectic around here."

However hectic, MNDOT doesn't expect the project will cause major delays as long as drivers use common sense.

Miller: "We just encourage motorists to slow down, pay attention, and expect people to stop."

Traffic is expected to stay busy tonight until about 7 p.m. then become very busy again on Monday as people head home from the lakes.
