Cavalier, ND (WDAY TV) - People in Cavalier are returning to their homes today, after being evacuated Tuesday because of threat of a dam breach that would've flooded the town.

The highway patrol re-opened the two state highways 5 and 18 into Cavalier this morning. A stream of cars rolled back into town at 7 a.m.

Federal Officials say water at the dam dropped today at a rate of a couple of inches an hour.

Ruth Rollefstad, Back in Cavalier: “You are worried about the dam breaking, and you are worried about your town, and you are worried about where your neighbors are at.”

Reed Erickson, Back in Cavalier: "Gotta love to be back spending time with family. “

The flood fight continues for some living just outside of Cavalier to the west of town, where high water has surrounded several homes and have water damage to basements. Pumps will continue to run until the water recedes.
