Casselton, ND (WDAY TV) - A truck driver somehow survived a bizarre accident today along I-94.
It happened four miles east of Casselton. The driver blew a tire, plowed through a guardrail, and crashed into a creek bank.
The call came in around 12 o'clock today after witnesses say they saw the front tire of this truck, blow out and cause the driver to lose control.
Sgt. Troy Hischer, ND Highway Patrol: "We've seen lots of people go down in the rivers and where there's the coulees here along I-94, but in this case with a semi, it is very strange, especially how it's impaled in the river bank."
The driver who was traveling east from Enderlin was trapped inside the cab of the truck, while fuel leaked into the water around him.
Life flight landed while rescue crews tried to cut, and even dig him out.
Sgt. Hischer: "Basically anytime you need a backhoe to dig a car crash victim out, it's very odd."
But crews had him extricated in less than an hour and say he was conscious and talking.
Sgt. Hischer: "Looking at this you would first think that it's very severe, if not a fatality, but apparently at this point it's not. So, we're lucky nobody else was involved."
The man was taken to a hospital by ambulance.
Still no word on the driver's condition or any possible injuries.
