CAVALIER, N.D. - Officials have ordered a mandatory evacuation at 7 tonight of Cavalier and other areas directly downstream from the Renwick Dam.
“It is necessary at this time to take action to protect your family and property,” Cavalier Police Chief Steve Yttredahl said. “We are implementing predetermined actions to respond to a rapidly developing situation that could result in dam failure.”
A shelter has been established at Drayton Public School.
A mandatory evacuation has been in effect since late this afternoon.
The Renwick Dam is on the Tongue River at Icelandic State Park, about 6 miles west of the city of Cavalier, a community of 1.300 that serves as the Pembina County seat. The city is about 80 miles north of Grand Forks.
Emergency officials are worried about the structural integrity of an emergency levee built on top of the dam’s emergency spillway.
Portions of Pembina and Cavalier counties have received 6 to 7 inches of rain over the past four days, which has raised water levels in the Tongue and other area rivers and filled up reservoirs.
