Moore, OK (WDAY TV) -- A massive search and rescue effort continues at this hour after a tornado devastated a suburb of Oklahoma City.

The massive tornado flattened entire neighborhoods and destroyed an elementary school with a direct hit this afternoon. WDAY's TJ Nelson has been following this unbelievable story out of Moore, Oklahoma.

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin spoke for many when she said simply our "hearts are broken." 51 people are confirmed dead and the death toll will rise as parents wait and wonder about the fate of their children.

Classes at The Plaza Towers Elementary School were still in session when the massive tornado, more than a mile wide, barreled through around 3 o'clock.

"The scene over there at the school was catastrophic. it's just, I mean, there's chaos."

While rescuers have been pulling children alive from the wreckage, 7 students at the school are among the dead.

It was one of two schools in the path of the tornado with winds estimated near 170 miles per hour.

"We saw the circulation and went and hid underneath the closet underneath the stairs."

It left an enormous path of destruction as far as the eye could see.

"This house caught fire. there was no way to get to it to put it out."

Homes , businesses leveled. Cars tossed like toys or just smashed. From New Castle to Moore, all that's left of many homes is a pile of wood and debris scattered along driveways and boulevards.

Area hospitals are treating dozens of people for "signs of trauma, lacerations and broken bones". Bones and hopefully all of those broken hearts will heal in time.

The governor says search and rescue efforts will carry on all night until every last person is accounted for. Get the latest tomorrow morning on First News and Good Morning America.
