This plan has been on the fast track since summer, as the city continues to boom, city hall and police staff grow, but the building hasn't. One official I talked to said people are basically using closets for offices in this building.
The commission meeting is going on right now, this is wrapping up the planning stage. West Fargo's growth in the 2000s has been flat out unprecedented. The population has nearly doubled.
2000 -- 14,490.
2011 estimates 27,565.
Miles of road from 140 to now 308.
This is bogging down police, the number of calls they're dispatched to has more than doubled since 2000. Traffic crashes nearly doubled in that time.
The city needs to hire more police staff all around, but doesn't have the space to house them.
Reitan: "We do currently share spaces, so we have hot seats that they come to, somebody else is using that desk along with them."
Assistant Chief Mike Reitan went over the plan with us today. The new facility will be 1 story, and they're building for the future.
West Fargo is in a unique position, it knows it'll max out at around 46-thousand people. So they sized this add-on to accommodate a staff suitable for a town that size. Commissioner say it'll save money in the long run, even with some parts sitting empty for a few years.
"once the city is built out to the 46,000 or more the building will be full."
And we did just get the video for the 3D model of this new facility. This is what was unveiled to the commission just minutes ago. You can see it's one floor, the entire project is expected to cost around 10-million dollars. Bidding for construction at earliest would be late summer.
