Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) -- Today's weather didn't stop hundreds from wetting a line. It's the annual Hooked on Fishing event in Grand Forks.

Many families braved the rain to try their luck at fishing, but they say what it's really about is making memories.

Leigha Zerr: "They're excited. Something fun for the family to do."

Chris Rood: "Memories will last a lifetime for them."

Sponsors say the goal is to get kids interested in the outdoors, and it seems to work.

Chris: "People mark it on their calendars and they make it a point to come back each year which is good to see."

Lynne Roche: "It's nice to see them fish together and just spend some quality time."

Kids like Thomas and Gabe,

"I'm 4." "I'm 6."

are taking home more than new fishing gear.

"I think I'll name it Floppy."

Chris: "It's really fun to see the kids' faces light up when they do catch a fish."

What are you going to do with the fish?

"We're going to eat him."

Others like Frank Beaver and his sons weren't as lucky.

Frank: "Fishing is really good, but catching is a little slow so far."

But no one goes home empty handed.

Lynne: "They can bring that rod and the bait and the tackle box home and come back anytime they'd like."

Every child got a free rod & reel along with a tackle box.
