Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Gas prices in Fargo are hitting record numbers. In a little more than 24 hours, gas has jumped about forty cents.

Many gas stations in town are now charging $4.19 a gallon.

Pump prices are on the move, and they are rising fast. In the time we spent talking to customers at this gas station, the price per gallon went up twenty cents.

Don Carlsen- Fargo Resident: "I liked it more a week ago! But what can you do?"

Last week, the average price of gas was $3.61.

Now, many Fargo gas stations are charging $4.19… though places like Sam's Club still have the comparatively low rate of $3.48.

Fargo resident Jeff Eisert says the rising prices are putting a damper on a trip to the cities next week.

If prices stay this high, it will cost about eleven dollars more to get there and back compared to what it would have been a week ago.

Jeff Eisert- Fargo Resident: "Just kind of bite the bullet and deal with it. It's just something that everybody needs."

The biggest factor in gas prices is the price of crude oil, which was at $96 a barrel today.

In comparison, the last time gas prices reached the four-dollar mark was in the summer of 2008.

Back then, crude oil was $138 per barrel.

Two Midwest oil refineries are temporarily shut down this week, so the decreased supply could be contributing to the higher prices.

Carlsen: "Obviously some sort of gouging. They say it's refinery restrictions but I feel that they haven't made many refineries lately."

Experts say the higher gas prices could extend into July.
