Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Children had their time in the Fargo Marathon spotlight this evening as the Youth Run took off in North Fargo. But some kids did more than just run; they inspired.
This week here at WDAY, we shared the stories of two children running the marathon's youth run: five-year-old cancer survivor Isaiah Lawson and three-year-old Annabelle Hannig, who has a prosthetic leg.
Tonight, they strapped on their tennis shoes and despite the long journeys they have already run, demonstrated a glowing example of strength and perseverance.
Excitement and chatter filled the starting line of the Fargo Marathon's Youth Run, as kids of all sizes prepared to race.
For five-year-old Isaiah Lawson, it was a very special night.
Christine Lawson, Isaiah’s Mother: "Why are you running today?"
Isaiah Lawson, Cancer Survivor: "Because I'm all done with cancer."
Christine: "You're all done, aren't you?"
Weeks after being declared cancer-free, there was Isaiah right up front kicking off the Youth Run and spending time with his peers for the first time in more than a year.
Christine: "It's really great to kind of close this chapter and it's symbolic with the race he's already run."
Liz Hannig, Annabelle’s Mother: "Are you excited to run? How fast are you gonna run?"
Annabelle Hannig, Born without Fibula: "Really fast!"
Annabelle Hannig was born without a fibula in her left leg, and with hip dysplasia, but even those challenges so early in life haven't kept this lively three-year-old still.
Taking on the Youth Run with a prosthetic leg, Annabelle was a true example of determination.
Liz: "I just want other kids to see her running alongside her sister. We have a great support system and Annabelle can do this just like any other kid."
Both Isaiah and Annabelle finished the half mile race in good time, backed up by their families and supporters.
