Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Many runners have told me over the past few years that they come back to run the Fargo Marathon first because the course is flat and second they love the environment. Chris Erichsen can add another reason: he's the course record holder.

Erichsen returns to Fargo for the first time since he won the race back in 2010 in a record time of 2 hours 19 minutes and 55 seconds. Erichsen has went on to race at the U.S. Olympic Trials but has been out of action for the last seven months and says he's not sure what to expect come Saturday.

Chris Erichsen, Fargo Marathon Record Holder: “The first time I ran Fargo, it was actually my first marathon ever, so I didn't know what the heck I was doing. Now I've done five, this will be my sixth, so just understanding how to prepare for the race, like what to expect. It's difficult to anticipate everything that'll happen. You got to prepare for anything out there. Anytime you're running for two plus hours, the way you're feeling can turn, the weather can turn dramatically. When things happen like that, you just have to be mentally prepared for that more than anything.”

There is someone who's run a faster marathon time than Erichsen in this year's field. James Kirwa from Kenya has run 2:12. Other major threats to win besides those two are runners from Arizona, Illinois and two-time champ Chad Wallin from Minot. His best marathon time is 2:28.
