Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - There is a good chance jaws dropped and veins popped today as many of you pulled up to convenience stores to fill up with gas.

In the last 48 hours, gas prices in our region have jumped 70 cents.

Imagine the cussing and grief that store clerks put up with, when dealing with frustrated customers. Today, everyone was venting.

Even in Fargo Moorhead there was an amazing difference in gas prices. Shortly before noon, $3.99 a gallon in Fargo, across the bridge in Moorhead, $3.79. As we headed east, our timing was perfect, as the Stop and Go here joined the crowd moving from $3.79 to $3.99. Manager Tony Johnson has heard it all from customers, some in fun, some not.

Tony Johnson, Stop and Go: “I don't know if you need thick skin as much as a sense of humor.”

In Hawley, a hold out, $3.75 a gallon. The shock would follow us east down 10.

And in Detroit Lakes, amazing story of numbers: just two days ago, $3.51; yesterday, $3.71; and today, $4.15 a gallon.

Paula Zitzow, Customer: “It is unfair. We have no control. It’s unfair to the consumer because it is a necessity you have to take it no matter what it costs.”

Cashiers and clerks say their hands are tied. Price jumps are out of their control, in fact the signs are changed by computer by corporate miles from here. Customers still feel taken.

Alison Maloney, Store Clerk: “I hear, ‘Are you getting paid the difference?’ and everything else. People joke about it.”

Sadly, most drivers are just getting used to the price drops and jumps. History tells us, we will pay for the expensive gas, but expect us to blame and complain, regardless.

The one thing we noticed on our drive back from Detroit Lakes this afternoon. All those gas stations that were holding out this morning, had taken down their $3.79 and were back up to $4.00 a gallon gas.
