Park Rapids, MN (WDAY TV) - Calm winds allowed fire crews to gain ground on a wildfire that has scorched more than 7,100 acres in three Minnesota counties.

While they're making progress on the Green Valley fire, it's still considered only 25 percent contained. The fire has burned 12 homes and 43 other buildings between Menahga and Park Rapids.

Crews have built a barrier of heavy equipment and trenches in an effort to keep the fire from spreading. Authorities say sightseers are getting to be a problem. They're asking people to stay away this weekend.

Law enforcement officials confirm that logging equipment started a massive wildfire in northwestern Wisconsin.

It began Tuesday afternoon and destroyed 17 homes and forced dozens of people to evacuate as the blaze burned across 9,000 acres. No injuries have been reported.

Firefighters contained the fire late last night.
