Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - A bill that would authorize the Red River flood diversion project has passed the United States Senate.
The nearly $2 billion proposal is part of the 2013 Water Resources Development Act.
Authorization would allow construction to begin, but the federal funding would need to be appropriated each year.
Minnesota Senator Al Franken says this is an important first step in the process.
Sen. Al Franken, (D) Minnesota: “There is no substitute for a permanent fix and this is the first step on the road to making sure that Fargo Moorhead is protected against the event of a 500 year, up to a 500 year flood.”
The House must also authorize the diversion before it can be funded.
