Menahga, MN (WDAY TV) - Crews continue to battle raging wildfires in the Menahga, Park Rapids area. Several thousand acres have been scorched and several structures have burned.
This fire is still very active as you can see. Logs here at this sawmill are still burning and there are several hot spots still around the property.
Planes and helicopters have been dumping hundreds of gallons of water over the area all day. As of right now about 7,100 acres have been scorched. There isn't a total number yet of how many structures have been damaged. Crews right now are working to finish the dozer line.
Wildland firefighters are working inside the line, going structure to structure putting out any hotspots. Highway 71 between Park Rapids and Menahga was being closed as we were driving by because the flames were reaching the road. Over 40 different departments from around the area have helped fight this fire.
Ron Sanow, Public Information Officer: “We also have a significant number of fire departments yet with fair apparatus on the fire and they are going structure to structure residential area to residential area looking at trying to locate any smoke any hot spots at all we do not want to lose a structure anymore at this point because we haven't been thorough enough.”
