Grand Forks Air Force Base has new commander

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Col. Paul Baumann took over as commander of Grand Forks Air Force Base during an assumption of command ceremony on Wednesday.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Col. Paul Baumann took over as commander of Grand Forks Air Force Base during an assumption of command ceremony on Wednesday.

Baumann, 43, replaces Col. Christopher Mann, a vice commander who took over temporarily in mid-March when then-commander Col. Tim Bush was relieved of command for failing to meet physical fitness requirements.

Baumann comes from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, where he was a wing vice commander.

Gen. William Bender proclaimed Baumann the right commander at the right time," the Grand Forks Herald reported.

"He has the aptitude and attitude for the job and a sterling biography," Bender said. "He knows the Air Force from every angle, from the Pentagon to the field level. We need his leadership."

Bender addressed the matter of the base's former commander not meeting fitness requirements.

"The Air Force is built on a foundation of trust," Bender said. "A failure to meet Air Force standards is a breakdown of trust and undermines the Air Force as an institution."
