Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- If you decide to burn, with a red flag warning in place, or decide to burn without a permit, you can get in trouble.

If you break the law, you could be paying fire department fees, and even go to court.

Sheriff Bill Bergquist says, "Part of a burning permit, you have to stay with the fire until it is entirely out. Part of the problem is that people burning ditches don't let us know, don't get a permit and then all of a sudden someone's property is damaged because of it."

The rules in every county and city can be quite different, be sure to check with your local fire department.
