Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- Orphaned girls in Sudan are benefiting from the charitable efforts of students at Carl Ben Eielson.

A student leadership team awarded Deb Dawson a check for 550 dollars to go towards her organization. This year students chose to show support and raise awareness for African Soul, American Heart.

The local organization is dedicated to protecting, educating, and empowering orphaned girls through a school in Southern Sudan.

Natalie Schawow, 8th grader, says, "we have so much living in America and it's so cool to be able to give back to someone not as fortunate."

9 new girls will be added to the school because of donations. Dawson will be traveling to Sudan on Friday.
