Ex-Minnesota corrections officer sentenced in sex case

GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. (AP) — A former corrections officer from Tower has been sentenced to more than five years in prison for having sex with a female inmate.

The Itasca County prosecutor's office says 57-year-old James Allen Bongaarts received a sentence Monday consistent with Minnesota sentencing guidelines. Bongaarts was immediately taken into custody.

Bongaarts was accused of multiple acts of sexual misconduct with a female inmate over a two-month period at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Togo. The facility, also known as Thistledew, houses a boot camp for non-dangerous adult women offenders.

The Minnesota Department of Corrections says Bongaarts was later fired.

In March, Bongaarts pleaded guilty to two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, a felony. The court also ordered him to provide a DNA sample and register as a predatory offender.
