BARNESVILLE, Minn. – Several grass fires in Clay County have made for a busy Sunday afternoon for the Hawley and Barnesville fire departments.

As of 5:30 p.m., both departments were on scene of a grassfire near Highway 34 east of Barnesville, according to Clay County Sheriff Sgt. Brian Norberg.

That fire had gotten close to a house but was still more than 100 feet away and had since been contained, Norberg said.

A separate fire was also burning south of Barnesville near the Wilkin County line on Highway 9, Norberg said. Barnesville firefighters were on scene battling that fire.

Earlier in the day, the Hawley Fire Department had responded to and extinguished a grassfire in rural Hawley, Norberg said.
