Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) -- Cancer survivors and their families were honored today during UND's baseball game in Grand Forks.
The team wore lavender sweatbands to support the second annual Cancer Awareness Day sponsored by the Cope Well Foundation. Cope Well's founder Ashley Johnson, herself a cancer survivor, says she started the non-profit to help meet the emotional needs of all people affected by cancer.
Johnson says, "I spoke with other survivors about what they were going through, and what was missing in their survivorship journey. It always came back to the same thing, it was the emotional side of it. There's so much attention put on the physical recovery, which is rightfully so, but the emotional side gets overlooked and ignored."
The annual Cope Well Walk, Run and Fun Fest will be next month in downtown Grand Forks.
