Minnesota (WDAY TV) -- With many Minnesota lakes still frozen, this year's fishing opener is one for the record books.
Such conditions haven't been seen in more than 50 years, and in Bemidji, it's more than just the fishing that's down. There was plenty of ice to be seen on the shores of Lake Bemidji today, but not much else.
Pete Harrison/Lake Bemidji State Park Manager: "I think the weather and lack of access on the lakes is definitely showing itself."
Aaron Templin/Taber's Bait Employee: "The opening weekend is a little bit different than normal."
Garette Roberts/Bemidji Resident: "Are there any places to fish right now on the lake? Not that I know of."
With such a late spring, and ice still covering most of the lake, fishing isn't the only thing that suffers. The local economy is also taking a hit.
Aaron: "There was quite a bit of cancellations."
Definitely the local resorts and outfitters and stuff in the area are seeing a big hit from this. Usually a weekend like this they would be probably full or over brimming with people.
Aaron: "I think everybody is a little frustrated."
But the frustration over weather isn't keeping the locals from coming to Taber's Bait in Bemidji.
Aaron: "I think it's our atmosphere around here. People want to come in and talk fishing either way. Whether they're out actually doing it, they want to come in and check the tackle out."
Despite the season being pushed back a few weeks, residents look at the bright side.
Pete: "Not too much longer, we just got to bear with it a little bit."
Garette: "You can go ice fishing still. There's some pretty thick ice around here."
Pete: "It will be something to talk about, something to share with our kids and our grandkids."
Residents say Lake Bemidji is opening up more every day, and they expect much better conditions next weekend.
