A view from the sky shows bigger lakes are still covered in ice

(WDAY TV) -- Good news anglers, we are just hours away from the fishing opener.

(WDAY TV) -- Good news anglers, we are just hours away from the fishing opener.

But there is some bad news, as you can see, many of the bigger lakes are still ice covered.

For those of you counting down the hours, we have a birds eye view of where you might be headed. Pilot Steve Nelson gave us a chance to see just how icy things are.

If you are heading to smaller waters like Star, Dead Lake, and Silver, you should have no problem with ice. If you take a look the waters have little to no ice, and should melt fairly soon.

The problem is when you get to bigger waters like Lida, Battle Lake, and Otter Tail lake. Here is a sky view of Battle. As you can see water is open around the edges but in the middle, a sheet of ice.

From the ground view of Otter Tail Lake, it's the same scenario. Along the shore line, ice is starting to push up.

With wind in the forecast, more and more of this ice will be moving in.

So If you are heading out, it seems the safest bet is to stick to smaller lakes and give bigger waters a few more warm days to catch up
