Otter Tail Lake (WDAY TV) -- Boating safety officials want to warn people of the dangers of going out when there is still ice on the lake.

Although there is open water close to shore, it can be deceiving. The chunks of ice still left on the lake can move very quickly and can be deadly. With ice on the lake the water temperature has to be in the 30's.

Even if you are wearing a life vest you can still die of hypothermia. And if you don't get hurt, your boat can be destroyed.

David Weiss, Water Patrol with the Otter Tail Co. Sheriff's office, says, "if that sheet starts moving and it moves towards the access or where they have their boat in, there are not going to get out, they're going to be trapped out in the open water where ever that would be."

Weiss says you should make sure your boat is working properly, your cell phone if fully charged, and always wear a life vest.
