Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Minnesota will likely be the 12th state to allow same-sex marriage; that after a historic vote in the state House this afternoon.

The measure has even more support going into the Senate and Governor Dayton says he will sign it.

Four house republicans broke party lines to pass the gay marriage bill, while two democrats voted against it. In all it passed 75 to 59.

This news comes just half a year after Minnesota voters rejected a law to put a ban against gay marriage in its constitution. In a sudden change, it's very likely gay couples will begin to wed in Minnesota starting August 1st.

Keith Whiteford, Opposes Gay Marriage: “I don't think it should be called a marriage, maybe a union. To me a marriage is between a man and a woman.”

Dan Thureen, Supports Gay Marriage: “I think it's the right thing to do. It's the loving, compassionate thing to do. I have a lot of gay friends who will be very happy for that.”

Eleven other states allow gay marriages. Minnesota would be the first in the Midwest to pass it through legislation. Iowa allows it because of a court ruling.
