Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The Diversion Authority voted on a major step toward the future of Oxbow, Hickson and Bakke.
Members had four options, ranging from buying out all 196 homes, to partial buy out of the area and ring dike the rest, or put a ring dike around all of the homes.
They went with the least expensive option at $60 million, a ring dike around all of the homes. Some will need to be relocated though.
It'll protect that area to a 500 year flood.
Darrell Vanyo, Diversion Authority Chair: “I think that moving forward with protection puts people in the position where they know what the future is and they certainly know a lot sooner than if we looked at buyouts.”
The corps will now hold public meetings on the ring dike and it'll make the final decision at the end of summer on what plan is chosen.
