Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - In less than three weeks, a Vining, Minnesota native and NASA astronaut will head into space.

Karen Nyberg is in Russia right now, preparing for a late-May launch to the International Space Station.

After months of intense training stateside and in Russia, Karen Nyberg's upcoming days will be spent with her family, her husband, also an astronaut, and son Jack. Both with her in Russia this week. Jack knows his mom is going on a long trip.

Karen Nyberg, Nasa Astronaut: “The longest I have been away from him is five weeks and he is three so it is hard to know what he understands, but we do tell him that Mommy is going to live at the space station. He knows what a rocket is and he knows the ISS travels around the earth.”

Six months in space will be an adjustment physically and mentally. Missing things every day most of us take for granted.

Nyberg: “Coffee out of the bag is just not the same.”

And despite daily communication with family

Nyberg: “We have an internet protocol phone and video conferences once a week. That will be unusual.”

The time away and missed milestones will be the hardest.

Nyberg: “A lot of pictures and video taken. Jack will start pre-school in September and so I will miss his first day of school which makes me sad but there will be pictures and my husband will do a great job.”

The science and research projects going on at the space station are many. Nyberg will be a part of it. With Twitter and other social media, she and NASA hope to keep everyone updated on her incredible journey.

What all started as one small town's girl with adventurous imagination.

Nyberg: “I think for parents of little girls let them dream and imagination roll and do what they want to do.”

Karen takes off for the International Space Station on May 28th from Kazakhstan.
