Democratic Freshman Lawmaker, Josh Boschee, returns to Fargo

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- There's a perception, when it comes to North Dakota politics, there's Fargo, and the rest of the state.

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- There's a perception, when it comes to North Dakota politics, there's Fargo, and the rest of the state.

Democrat Freshman lawmaker, and the state's first openly gay state representative Josh Boschee (boe-shay) says he found that out first hand.

Josh Boschee is back from his Freshman session, he found out with the highs come some lows, he recalls helplessly watching those abortion bills pass.

Did you know in North Dakota you can still be fired or kicked out of your apartment for being gay? Boschee's party tried to pass a bill to end that, he had to watch the board light up with no votes.

"how were you perceived out there?

Boschee: "Me being openly gay and elected as openly gay, it didn't have the issues that I was preparing myself for there were certainly some people who stayed away from me but for the most part I proved myself as a legislator."

Boschee says the way the nation is shifting right now in its viewpoints,

likely played a major role in some of the state's lawmakers tightening up what's commonly called the "North Dakota way."

Boschee: "It's concerning because I think those viewpoints are being made from a viewpoint of lets make a decision now because we know the direction the state or nation is going."

The young lawmaker wants nothing to do with Washington, rather to be part of North Dakota modernizing. He himself could be called a "modern lawmaker" posting almost daily on Facebook and Twitter, connecting an audience to the Capitol like we've never seen before.

Boschee: "People are looking for leadership and looking for someone to be honest with what's happening and I think that is something the Legislature is dealing with from what i've heard from some people that have been there for awhile they have to get used to what do they say and how do they say it because it's much more public than it has been in the past."

Fittingly his final Facebook posts sums it up well, He thanks Bismarck but says, I must return to my true love, Fargo. She and I tend to get along a lot better when it comes to politics.

Boschee has 1 term left, and says he plans to run for re-election after that.
