Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- It's that time of year. People are opening their garage doors to make a few extra bucks, and bargain-shoppers are showing up in droves.

But to get the best bang for your buck, it's important to keep in mind which items are worth buying used.

Garage sale Saturday is always a busy time in the Pointe West neighborhood of Fargo. Each year, about 40 homes all hold garage sales at the same time and it brings out loads of bargain-hunters.

Waynett: "We actually had people waiting at the door at 7:20 and we didn't open until 7:30."

Garage sales can be a win-win situation. The seller makes a few extra bucks for all of that spring cleaning, and the shopper gets a good deal, IF you know what to look for.

Website Bargaineering.com has a few tips for garage-sale-goers.

One of the very best items to look for at a garage sale is kids' clothing. Kids grow really fast, so the clothes are usually still in pretty good condition.

Home d├ęcor and furniture are often overlooked because large items are difficult to move. But the savings can be worth it. Wood furniture is best, mattresses and upholstery can harbor bed bugs.

Storm: "We actually have a new town home we're moving into, so just looking for decorations for that."

Jessica: "That kind of stuff is usually expensive, so it's nice to find it cheaper."

Often, people buy new exercise equipment in January and never use it. Come spring, it's up for sale, nearly new, and at a great price. Books, CDs, and DVDs are also great deals at just a fraction of the retail cost.

These items aren't just cheap finds, they're some of the big sellers...

Waynett: "I think the big items. Like, my husband's tools sold right away, we sold the baby items pretty quick."

Darrin: "It's the kids stuff. A lot of the kids' clothing and kids' toys."

Use your best judgement, if something looks like a hunk of junk, don't buy it. Items to stay away from at a garage sale are car seats, you can't always tell if they have been in an accident...hats, and underwear.
