BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Scrap metal sales in North Dakota are now regulated.

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says the regulations provides law enforcement with additional tools to investigate reports of stolen industrial, construction and building materials, such as metal pipe and copper wire.

The regulations come after a string of thefts in Fargo, Grand Forks and Williston.

Stenehjem says scrap metal dealers must keep a record of any transaction involving more than $25 worth of scrap metal, including details of the type and amount of material involved.

The regulations do not apply to beer kegs, food and beverage containers or wrecked cars.

Stenehjem says North Dakota is the 49th state to impose regulations on scrap metal purchases.
