Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Cass County executed a rather "personal" search warrant. After an inmate was found damaging a cell block, officers strip-searched the man. Only to find nothing.
So, they had to dig a little deeper. A judge court ordered a search of the 33-year-old's digestive tract.
Believe it or not, officials found a plumbing hose clamp.
That's what the inmate was using to put small cracks in his cell windows. And although this kind of search warrant is unusual, the idea of his hiding place isn't.
Dan Orr- U.S. Marshal's Service: "Is it an unusual behavior, absolutely. Is it rare, no."
Whether it's part of a devious plan, a way to stir up trouble or out of pure boredom, this isn't the first.
Orr: "There's everything from self mutilation to things such as this, where they'll try to conceal items of contraband or even sometimes weapons within body cavities."
Nine times out of ten people try to hide drugs either in a condom or a small baggy before they're sent behind bars.
Sheriff Paul Laney-Cass County: "We try to run a pretty tight ship so it's a little bit harder for them to get things."
Carlos Kidd is being held on charges of mailing a threatening letter to a U.S. District Judge.
He found a way around security to stash his, let's call it a unique weapon. A plumbing clamp, just like this one.
Laney: "There's not a lot that surprises me anymore. And more, I'll be more like, woah, that had to hurt."
And since this isn't so uncommon, we wanted to know what else have deputies come across in that - not so comfortable hiding spot. But, HIPPA laws prevent the most of those details from being passed along.
Laney: "We've heard to many stories and heard too many things for it to even shock us anymore."
Kidd won't be facing any additional charges for this incident. As for the surgery, well that bill is pinned on all of us taxpayers.
