Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- A new study says North Dakota has the highest increase in suicide rates, for middle aged people.

In the United States, a person dies from suicide every 15 minutes, An attempt is made every minute.

Why are North Dakota's rates so shockingly high?

Tiffaney Holm- Lost Father to Suicide: "To take your life, it's heartbreaking."

Tiffaney Holm was just 12 years old when a suicide changed her life forever.

Holm: "I remember waking up to the sound of my mom screaming."

Her father had killed himself. He was only 38.

Holm: "It all felt like a dream. I had no idea until the day that my dad died that he suffered from depression."

He's not alone.

In the last decade, North Dakota had one of the country's highest suicide rate increases for people 35 to 64.

It rose by an alarming 70 percent, with 47 people taking their own lives... Up from 28 people in the 10 years before.

Holm: "It's frightening and we need to do more as far as education and prevention."

John Lyon- The Village Therapist: "It's hard to say the reasons because it's very individual."

Theories point to a lack of available mental health services and returning Iraq veterans.

And Therapist John Lyon says it could be partially due to added stress in the Western part of the state, or population growth.

Lyon: "There are lots of therapists, lots of people who are available to provide services."

For both people struggling with mental health, or coping with the loss of a loved one.

Holm: "Funny guy to be around, everybody loved him."
