Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- North Dakota leaders, along with friends and family of one of the state's most respected governors, are celebrating the life of William Guy.

They gathered at First Presbyterian Church in Fargo to honor him through song, prayer, and remembrance.

Guy lost his battle with Alzheimers last Friday at 93, years after serving as governor from 1961 to 1973, the longest tenure of any governor yet.

Former US senators Byron Dorgan and Kent Conrad spoke of Guy's political achievements, strong family values, and his legacy.

FMR. SEN. Kent Conrad- (D) North Dakota: "Bill Guy was a giant in North Dakota political history. We stand on his shoulders."

Another memorial service will be held Thursday morning at First Presbyterian Church in Bismarck.
