Wyndmere, ND (WDAY TV) -- Residents of Wyndmere could soon be paying double for their property tax. The average lot appraisal jumping nearly 54 percent. Now, residents are concerned they're not going to be able to cover the fee.
The last time the Wyndmere area was assessed was almost ten years ago. In 2004, property owners were given discounts on their location- given they were so far away from necessary amenities. This time around, discounts have been dropped and properties finally reappraised.
It's the small-town feel, fresh clean air, and friends, that brought Donna Miller here.
Cards are just a bonus. She only lives 2 streets down from the Senior Center. In house 206.
She's been here for 18 years.
Donna Miller: "I'd hate to have a new one right now, in Wyndmere."
Donna has seen her taxes rise before. But not like this.
Miller: "never, never."
This time, she was dealt a bad hand.
Last year she paid just over 14 hundred dollars for her property in Wyndmere.
Miller: "It's going to be about 24 hundred dollars for our home a year."
Fortunately for her, she can afford. But for her friend and neighbor,
Lenora Jensen: "ooh, just how can this be?"
With her husband gone, her only funding is her teacher's retirement.
Jensen: "My income is a lot less than it was so it might be a problem."
Miller: "There's many people, in town, that cannot afford that."
For now, the tax hike isn't for sure. What is, is the small town charm and big hearted friends to get them through.
The proposal still has to be accepted by the city council, before it is approved.
