Walaker says crest might come in 1 foot under range

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker says there's a good chance the Red River in Fargo will crest a foot under the peak range predicted earlier by the National Weather Service.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker says there's a good chance the Red River in Fargo will crest a foot under the peak range predicted earlier by the National Weather Service.

The latest forecast calls for a range between 38 and 40 feet. The river begins to spill it banks at 18 feet. It was measured at about 21 feet Friday morning.

Walaker says the city's discussions with the weather service Friday indicated that "37 (feet) is a really good number." An updated forecast is due out later Friday.

High school students were enlisted Friday to help place about 100,000 sandbags in neighborhoods around the city. However, few structures are threatened at 37 feet, thanks primarily to increased flood protection efforts in recent years.

It's the fourth major flood in five years.
