Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Fargo flood fighters are watching and waiting as the Red River begins what's expected to be a sharp rise this weekend.

The National Weather Service put out a new number today saying the river will go to 38 feet by late Wednesday, May 1st, then level off.

But it's still not ready to predict a crest for Fargo. A lower crest range put out yesterday prompted the city to dial back its efforts by a couple of feet.

For Wahpeton, the weather service is sticking with a 15 foot crest Saturday into Sunday. That's well below its earlier prediction of 16.5 feet.

Meanwhile, the Red in Fargo went over flood stage of 18 feet early today. That means low spots, Elm Street for example, are starting to go under.
