FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The Red River has risen above flood stage in Fargo.

The river hit the 18-foot mark shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday. That level is considered minor flood stage and not much property is affected. Moderate flood stage is 25 feet, and major flood stage is 30 feet.

The city has built up its defenses to handle 37 feet without breaking out many sandbags. Officials are boosting those protections to handle 40 feet.

The National Weather Service says the river likely will top out between 38 and 40 feet sometime next week.
