Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - As we hit major flood stage in Fargo-Moorhead this weekend, getting around parts of the metro will mean some detours and closures this weekend.
The first thing you will notice when driving around the metro this weekend, is Center Mall Avenue which runs under all the bridges, will be closed this weekend because of the rising red.
Look for closures near Moorhead's Woodlawn Park as well, also near the river. In addition, the entrance to Gooseberry Park will close this weekend.
And there is a good chance we will lose one of our bridges this weekend. First Avenue North will close, which runs past the Hjemkomst, as work begins on a second street dike.
The good news is, the urgency to execute these steps is less with today's new forecast numbers
April Walker, City of Fargo Engineer: “It is a good thing. It is better to be over prepared and not under prepared so we are happy the melt has done as good as it has.”
And traffic on the metro's north side will be impacted Saturday when the 12th avenue bridge closes.
And depending on the rise of the red, 2nd street which runs along the downtown high rise could see dike construction as well.
The news today from the National Weather Service is also good for the main dike at Prairie St. John's. It is good until 40 feet, meaning the city of Fargo has breathing room before deciding whether or not to top off this dike with sandbags.
