Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - As river levels creep higher, make sure to keep in mind how contaminated water could be.

Public health officials are reminding people to do everything they can to prevent contact with flood water. They say garbage, animal feces, and fertilizer chemicals are just some of the things that runoff into the river.

The one good thing, water quantity during floods is so great, these contaminants get diluted. But even brief contact could result in viral illnesses or infections.

Myron Berglund, Environmental Health Dir.: “The basic thing is to just consider all flood water contaminated. Limit contact as much as possible. Wear boots, wear gloves, wash hands afterwards and just do all the precautionary things if you do come in contact with it and eventually, it will leave the area.”

Berglund also says homeowners who have wells should have them inspected for contamination if they get covered by flooding.
