West Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - People displaced after a fire in West Fargo are coming back home to see the damage.

The blaze broke out Wednesday afternoon in a townhouse with five units, all of them saw damage.

The first two units of the townhouse have severe fire, smoke and water damage, and people living on the opposite end are thankful theirs aren't any worse.

Julie Schroeder, Lives in Townhouse: “It's bad. It smells really strong and you can tell that it came through the roof.”

Julie Schroeder lives in one of the five units and returned today to find out how much she has left.

After fighting flames for several hours Wednesday, the fire department was back on scene today. They say most of the damage is to the back side of the building but much of the inside will have to be gutted.

Chief Roy Schatschneider, West Fargo Fire Dept.: “Well it was long and drawn out. This was the toughest one that I've been on in a long, long time.”

Schroeder: “We're just really lucky it didn't transfer all the way over.”

Schroeder says despite the damage, everyone is lucky they made it out safely.

Fire crews say residents will not be able to move back in for quite some time.
