Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Get ready to celebrate "National High Five Day" tomorrow.

And a local charity is using the special day to help raise awareness about a unique group that has likely helped your friend or neighbor.

For the last 5-years, "lend a hand," an arm of the Dakota Medical Foundation, has helped 225-families and volunteers who organize benefits in our community for those in medical crisis.

But in order to sustain that generous project, the group is asking you for a "high five."

It has been a tough couple of years for Rowan Hammer. Today the toddler works out with his physical therapists Holly and Gina

Awhile back, Lend a Hand worked with friends of Rowans' family, who volunteered to plan a benefit for the little Rowan, who has multiple medical issues, but who, his family, says, is making great strides. In a metro area known for throwing benefits for people in need, Rowan's parents say the support has made all the difference.

Steve Hammer- Rowan’s Dad: “We are in a good season to talk about community coming together for things, if there is one thing I have learned is that when something happens, when you need help, you got it.”

Over 5-million dollars raised the last 8-years, Lend a Hand is now calling on you this Thursday to Give a High Five

A small donation and act of kindness to keep the pot full of funds, so the next family in need gets support.

Jeana Peinovich- Lend A Hand: “Hopefully people can spare a five and they make a 5 dollar contribution on line and then we send out a virtual high five to a friend of their choice.”

Lend a Hand offers volunteers and organizers of benefits, an online tool kit. What to do and not to do when planning a benefit. And Rowan, even he is excited about National High Five Day. He approves.
