Minnesota (WDAY TV) -- Hard to believe with our never ending winter, but this week is severe weather awareness week in Minnesota.

Since 2000, disasters have claimed the lives of 21 Minnesotans and caused more than 373-million dollars in damages. Remember, watches mean conditions are favorable for the development of the severe weather, and warnings mean the hazard is occurring or likely to occur.

In addition to TV and radio notifications, there's now a system that notifies people via a smart phone in a text-like message.

Jim Kaiser with the National Weather Service says, "I think they need to have a plan weather they are in their house or outside. And when they are outside away from media sources make sure they have their phone and get the information they need."

North Dakota's severe weather awareness week is April 29th through May 3rd.
