Barnesville, MN (WDAY TV) -- Three semi-trucks and several other vehicles piled up on I-94 near Barnesville this afternoon.

Roads became slick quickly after the snow began to fall this afternoon. One of the trucks was hauling cattle, and another was hauling pigs. No humans were hurt, and the pigs got out safely.

The cattle, however, were trapped inside their trailer and some may have been injured. Traffic was diverted from that stretch of the Interstate for a few hours as authorities sorted out the mess.

Sgt. Jesse Grabow with the Minnesota State patrol says, "The weather did hit very hard very fast. I took a lot of motorists by surprise. It's just one of those things, you need to plan ahead and be prepared. It seems like the same old song I've been singing all winter, I feel like a broken record, but at the same time it's just one of those things that can happen when you're traveling in the Midwest and particularly in the Red River Valley."

The State Patrol expects to stay busy tonight as darkness adds to the poor road conditions.
