Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Depth is the top concern this spring for the NDSU football team.
And it starts at linebacker. Munich native Travis Beck played every down last season and the coaches don't want that to happen again.
They're hoping to get him off the field for 10 to 15 plays a game,
and those downs may fall on the shoulders of another
small town North Dakotan native.
Harvey's MJ Stumpf is playing with the first team defense this spring,
while Beck rehabs an injured shoulder. Stumpf has kept a close eye on Beck's career with the Bison, and he's hoping to have a similar impact.
MJ Stumpf- NDSU RFr. LB: "He's an athletic guy and I have really looked up to him, especially since NDSU started talking to me. They told me we see you as maybe playing as a Travis Beck type player and right now I'm just trying to look up to him and do as much as I can to mimic him and learning everything I can from him."
Steve Stanard- NDSU Linebackers Coach: "The thing right now that MJ has to learn is where to put his eyes, put his eyes on his keys. That's probably the biggest thing for a young linebacker. In high school they can pretty much run around and tackle the guy with the ball, but here the game moves pretty fast for him. Once he gets his eyes where they need to be, he's got all the skills to be a good linebacker for us."
